Research and teaching

Birmingham is a research-rich university. Whether pursuing a taught programme or a research degree, our students become part of a progressive learning and teaching environment.

Our students and staff are engaged in a wide range of research projects that could change lives and society in the future.

A pioneering approach

Research is at the heart of our activities, and we lead the field in many of the emerging disciplines of the 21st century such as nanotechnology, gene therapy, robotics and the use of virtual reality in the study of archaeology. The University’s major research themes include:

  • Sustainable environment
  • Energy and resources
  • Transport technology
  • Genes, cells and organisms

Original thinking

At Birmingham we invest in, develop and encourage original thinking, which has been nurtured in a number of household names making a difference in many walks of life. We have five Nobel Prize winners amongst our alumni and academic staff.

You can learn more about the pioneering research at the University, past and present, on the Original thinking website www.about.bham.ac.uk/original.

Research-based teaching

At Birmingham, we refer to our research-based approach to teaching as ‘enquiry-based learning’. Read more about enquiry-based learning in our Vision for Birmingham Learning.
